Scarred (King of Blades)

I've been doing my online trolling... ehem, surfing- through other media, and keep forgetting to update this blog. Soz. Anyway while waiting for Half a War to hit the selves, that's book 3 in 's Shattered Sea series, Mary recommended Scarred by Angelo Tsanatelis. While in the same vein, but not as polished as aforementioned series, the first book in the King of Blades series is a strong one.  Seen through the eyes of its flawed protagonist, it takes the reader for a nice and interesting quick (a page turner if ever was one) ride. The storyline is a search and rescue mission with a love twist on the surface. But it deals with a number of disturbing themes like rape and slavery during the Middle ages, gender equality, torture and the rising theme of fanatical cultures and societies. I liked Tod -the antihero- of the story. While brutal and dangerous, he follows a difficult moral code of his own making, ladden with rules taken from his experiences.
Nothing good ever comes from bad weather, he says at some point and while that may be true this is a good novel and a very decent effort. I'll have to check the sequel when it comes out and I will avoid to reveal a big spoiler hidden inside the story. Nice one, thanks Mary, it really did pack a punch ;)
I read the Barnes & Noble edition.
